Prestigious hand-painted icon with metal riza depicting Saint Nicholas of Myra.
The relics of this saint, popular in Europe as well as in the Greek and Slavic world, were stolen by Myra from Bari in 1087 who in turn disputed them in Benevento.
The adventurous sea transport journey and the reasons for the theft (to save them from the Turks) were the subject of at least four literary versions. Born in Patara in 280, Nicholas was bishop of Myra in Lycia, where he died between 345 and 352.
At the Council of Nicaea he vigorously opposed the heretical bishop Arius, was stripped of his sacred insignia and imprisoned: but Christ and the Virgin appeared to him, restoring his freedom and episcopal dignity, confirming him in the true faith.
From the first Byzantine icons in the 10th and 13th centuries, his iconographic cycle is enriched in Russia with new episodes set in those lands, such as the rescue on the Dnieper river. His half-length iconography represents him in bishop's robes, wrapped in the omorphorion adorned with crosses, blessing and with the gospel in his hand. The firmness of the face, the high forehead furrowed by wrinkles, the large concentrated eyes marked by thick eyebrows, the short beard, make Nicholas the image of the defender of the Christian faith against heresy as well as the exorcist and the healer.
His icon is surmounted by Christ and the Madonna and by small figures of local saints who invoke his intercession.
This icon is original, hand painted and comes with its certificate.
